GENERAL INFORMATION
Excellent specialists, sophisticated facilities and dedicated nursing staff who maintain the highest standard of care at all times, have earned Life Entabeni Hospital its reputation as the premier cardiac treatment centre in Kwazulu-Natal.
Since 1989, when Life Entabeni opened its first cardiac catheterisation laboratory, the hospital has upgraded and expanded its facilities and services in order to maintain five-star service.
Life Entabeni was the first private hospital in the province to use digitalised computer imaging (DCI) in its catheterisation laboratory. Surgeons at the hospital were also the first in South Africa to pioneer a revolutionary surgical technique - the Midcab technique - which is now used in selected coronary artery bypass operations. This medical advance generally reduces hospital stay after the operation to two or three days, and considerably reduces surgery time, patient trauma and medical bills.

The first successful heart transplant in Kwazulu-Natal was carried out at the hospital by cardio-thoracic surgeon, Mr Robert Kleinloog, in 1997. This has paved the way for many further heart transplants.
Transplant clinic
Once a patient is placed on the waiting list, the transplant clinic is responsible for monitoring their blood work up. The clinic also provides counselling on what the patient can expect during the procedure and what their lifestyle would involve afterwards as well as post-operative blood monitoring.
Transplant support group
Following the first heart transplants, a transplant support group was established. This close knit group comprises patients who have already received new organs, awaiting transplant patients as well as family members.
Transplant patients and their families provide invaluable moral support and practical information to those persons waiting for a suitable donor organ to become available, and also support the new recipient’s family during transplant surgery and recovery.
Natal bypass club
This heart bypass club holds regular meetings at Life Entabeni hospital. For further information, contact Mr Jack Piek on (031) 563-3200.
Health awareness initiatives
Life Entabeni has built up a reputation for its efforts in promoting preventive healthcare among the general public. In particular efforts are focused around education on the prevention of cardiac disease.
The hospital’s health awareness initiatives include regular talks on preventing heart disease through a healthy lifestyle, cholesterol testing, dietary advice and the distribution of relevant information leaflets and heart healthy diet sheets.
In response to a request by an local NGO, the hospital started in 1998 to provide training on the prevention of heart disease to a group of volunteers. In turn these volunteers are spreading the message to a number of disadvantaged communities, and further volunteers have since also been trained.
