GENERAL INFORMATION

Our trauma and emergency unit is capable of handling all cardiac emergencies and most other emergencies. Staffed by local NIMPA doctors 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with a full-time clinical manager, the unit is backed round the clock by resident specialists as well as by the on-site radiology and pathology units.

Cardiac consulting service at other Life Healthcare hospitals
A cardiologist from Life Flora Clinic consults at Life Robinson Hospital in Randfontein and Life Anncron Clinic in Klerksdorp once a week. Initial assessments of cardiac status can be done at these hospitals. Should a patient require further investigation or treatment they are then referred to Life Flora Clinic.

CARDIAC REHABILITATION SERVICE
The main aim of the cardiac rehabilitation unit at Life Flora Clinic is to assist patients to regain optimal health following cardiac related illnesses. These include cardiac bypass operation, valve replacement, myocardial infarction, hypertension, angina etc.
The unit is manned by two registered nurses who is responsible for the following:
- Pre-operative and pre-procedure visits of all cardiac as well as respiratory patients in the wards. The patient and his/her family is orientated with regards to the operation/ procedure as well as the treatment that will be provided in the intensive care unit.
- Patients are followed up daily to monitor their condition and to render emotional support.
- Patients are prepared for discharge and discharge information is given to patients and their family.
- Surgical patients are seen two weeks after discharge to monitor progress and handle possible problems and/or questions.
- On referral from the medical practitioner, the patient starts the exercise programme in the cardiac rehabilitation unit. Continuous monitoring of bloodpressure, cholesterol levels, pulse speed, weight and diet is done by the personnel.
- Monthly educational talks are given to the patients and family. Subjects that are covered are, for example, medication, CPR, Wafarin therapy, choking, diet. Patients are referred to members of the multi-disciplinary team as and when needed.
