CARDIAC FACILITIES AND SERVICES
- A 24-hour trauma and emergency unit capable of handling all cardiac emergencies. Our nursing staff are fully qualified in emergency medicine, and a doctor is on the premises 24 hours a day.
The unit is classified as a level one trauma and emergency unit, complete with state-of-the-art life support equipment.
We are fully supported by leading specialists and highly trained personnel within the hospital, which puts us in an excellent position to offer top class emergency cardiac treatment.
The hospital’s central location and easy access via the N2 highway, makes it highly accessible in the case of a cardiac emergency. In emergency medicine, timing is critical to recovery. The helicopter landing pad makes the rapid transfer of critically ill patients to the hospital so much easier.
- The x-ray and monitoring facilities in the cardiac catheterisation unit enable cardiologists to diagnose coronary artery disease and to assess the condition of the heart muscle. We are also able to treat patients with cardiac arrhythmias with sophisticated electrophysiology techniques. A core team of highly trained nursing staff is available around the clock to assist our cardiologists with emergency diagnostic and interventional cardiac procedures.
- One of the leading edge diagnostic and monitoring facilities is a highly advanced telemetry system, which allows long-distance monitoring of patients with cardiac arrhythmias. This facility enables one to monitor a patient’s heartbeat while he is walking around the hospital, giving a more accurate picture of the problem as many of the irregularities in heartbeat only come to the fore when the patient is walking.
- Equipped with diagnostic and monitoring facilities, Life Vincent Pallotti Hospital’s new 14-bed medical intensive care unit is a vital component of the cardiac facilities. A wide spectrum of medical emergencies is treated in the medical intensive care unit. These include heart attacks, septic shock, bad pneumonia, emphysema and severe asthma. The unit is equipped with advanced life support and resuscitation facilities, and the spacious, innovative design is aimed at both nursing excellence and positive patient outcomes.
- State-of-the-art theatres complement Life Vincent Pallotti Hospital’s cardiac unit. The monitoring equipment in these theatres is networked to all the critical care areas ensuring immediate online observation of critically ill patients. Trans-oesophageal ultrasound facilities used during cardiac surgery to assess the condition of heart valves and cardiac muscle, enhance the surgical environment.
- A 14-bed surgical intensive care unit, pivotal to the new high technology approach of the hospital, is equipped with life-support equipment for patients recovering from major cardiac, general and neurosurgery.
The semi-circular shape and five bay windows ensure an abundance of natural light, which helps the patients maintain their natural biorhythms and facilitates an easier recovery. The two isolation units, complete with their own gowning and sluicing areas, facilitate the treatment of both critically ill patients and those requiring strict isolation. The nursing staff are trained in critical care nursing and patients are given one-on-one care.
- Each patient in the intensive care units has a telephone at the bedside ensuring that loved ones are just a call away, which reduces anxiety and fear in both the patient and his family. The intensive care units also have a fully serviced guest suite, which is at the disposal of relatives who wish to remain with the critically ill patient.
- The thirty bed Cedar ward, which has been attractively decorated, provides a caring and comfortable atmosphere.
Patients who are in a stable condition and who are admitted for treatment to the Vincent Pallotti cardiac unit will be cared in Cedar ward before their operations. They are stabilised and undergo tests before the operation and once they leave the intensive care unit they spend four to five days recovering in Cedar ward before going home.
Cedar ward has a number of private and semi-private wards. The general wards are spacious with four beds to a ward. Each ward has its own bathroom and overlooks beautifully landscaped gardens. Tastefully appointed visitors’ facilities are available on the same floor. These too overlook the hospital gardens.
- A state-of-the-art radiology facility, with a comprehensive range of diagnostic equipment, facilitates the provision of appropriate, effective treatment. This facility includes a spiral CT scanner and a magnetic resonance imaging scanner.
- An on-site pathology laboratory, ensuring rapid blood test results, forms part of the diagnostic facilities.
- A rehabilitation centre with a heated hydrotherapy pool and a fully equipped gymnasium, for the rehabilitation of patients with cardiopulmonary conditions, completes the full spectrum of facilities available to the patient admitted to the Life Vincent Pallotti cardiac unit.
