The HM logo may appear on products only after they have gone through a strict process which includes laboratory tests to measure levels of saturated fat, trans fats, sodium, added sugar and fibre content.
The HSFSAs Nutritional Science department ensures that all products are carefully analysed and compared to the HM criteria. If the product does not meet certain criteria (e.g. the sodium salt level is too high), this will be discussed with the manufacturer and sometimes products will be reformulated.
As part of the robust quality assurance process, the HSFSA conducts regular independent testing on HM endorsed products and also monitor the retail shelves for products that may use the logo inappropriately.
