GETTING TESTED

Women are traditionally diligent about regular gynaecological tests. The Heart Foundation encourages women to develop a healthy relationship with their cardiologist too.

It is not only men that get heart disease
The perception that heart disease is a man’s disease and that women are more likely to die from breast cancer than heart disease, is a point of concern. Although women tend to develop heart disease 10 years later in their lives than men, the effects are generally greater for women.

One of the reasons why women have a higher heart disease-related death rate is simply because they live longer. 1 in 3 men and 1 in 4 women are at risk of heart disease before the age of 60. Women live longer than men and so have a higher incidence of heart disease.

In women the warning signs of a heart attack are less evident. The symptoms are markedly different from those experienced by men. Approximately 35% of heart attacks in women are believed to go unnoticed or unreported. Also, because of increased age, women are more likely to have other diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure.
