LIFE AFTER A STROKE

Sufficient dietary intake is essential, but if the person is overweight, his/her weight should be monitored/controlled. A dietician should be consulted.
There are various physical problems that could arise from a stroke, including eating difficulties. The extent of the stroke and the area of the brain affected determine the severity of these difficulties. It should be possible to include favourite foods by adapting the consistency and making texture changes to address these challenges and still ensure an adequate dietary intake.
Dysphagia (difficulty in swallowing) is one of the most common complaints associated with stroke. It contributes to many complications and has been associated with increased malnutrition, lung infections, longer hospital stay and increased risk of death.
