DIETARY GUIDELINES
 

Chewing and swallowing difficulties

Possible solution:

  • Serve soft, mashed foods, thickened drinks, soup, fruit juice etc.
  • Very hot/cold foods may be better tolerated than lukewarm/bland foods

Avoid/limit:

  • Thin liquids, milk, coffee, tea, and alcohol
  • Hard/crisp/tough foods, banana, sweet foods or fruit that can contribute to drooling

Constipation 

Possible solutions:

  • Adequate fibre intake (whole grains, bran, dried fruit and fibre-enriched supplements/bulking agents)
  • Adequate fluid intake
  • Exercise

Avoid/limit:

  • Gas-forming foods and beverages (e.g. dried beans, peas, lentils, cabbage, broccoli, onion, garlic)

Decreased appetite 

Possible solutions:

  • Smaller more frequent meals (5-6 smaller meals instead of 3 main meals)
  • Meals should be appetising in appearance and taste and provide sufficient nutrients

Avoid/limit:

  • Food low in energy and nutrients e.g. tea, coffee and diet drinks
